Old hot water cylinder? We can service it or install new

If your hot water cylinder was made before 1995, it’s costing you money because it’s keeping a lot of water hot, 24/7.

We can convert your old hot water system to an instantaneous continuous flow water heater like a Rinnai or a Rheem. These heaters only heat water when you turn on the hot tap, so you only pay for what you use.

Location, location, location

For best efficiency we’ll put your new unit close to where you use hot water the most, which is usually your kitchen. An instantaneous continuous flow water heater has to:

1. Heat the small amount of water inside its own heat exchanger, and then
2. Flush the cold water out of the pipe that connects it to your tap.

Obviously, the closer your water heater is to the tap you use the most, the better.

It can be challenging to install a new water heater in the best location, and we’ve sometimes seen installations that were easy for the plumber but a long way from the tap. It looks good because the easy location costs less up front.

Here’s the catch. Every time you turn on the tap you wait longer, and you pay more. Why? Your water heater has a longer pipe to fill with hot water before it everr gets to you.

Get hot water back on and running fast

Sometimes a major issue only requires a minor fix. An aged gas hot water cylinder’s pilot flame kept going out. The client was used to restarting it manually, but suddenly couldn’t restart it at all.

A quick assessment showed the ignition striker had become disconnected, hence the pilot flame wouldn’t light. We fixed that and the hot water was back! Then we explained options for replacement and how to safely keep the cylinder going in the meantime.

The ‘no parts’ snag

This cylinder was so old that we couldn’t get replacement parts. We always do our best to reuse and repair, but sometimes the only option is to replace.

Choosing the right appliance

Let’s say you’re thinking about getting a new gas hob, oven or flued heater. You look around online and ask a few friends. The more you look, the more your questions start to stack up:

• With all the options available, is it worth buying the most expensive brand or am I just buying a fancy label?
• Should I invest in the latest technology or should I go for something simpler?
• Aside from cost, which appliance is best suited to my needs?
• Is the appliance safe, reliable and user friendly?
• Is the appliance easy to service?
• Will parts be available five or ten years from now when things start to wear?
• Bottom line, which appliance will serve me best over the long run?

You may start to feel that you need a gas appliance expert just to make a good choice. If you do, you’re not far wrong!

Taking care of your gas appliances

Gas appliances are subject to wear and tear, and regular servicing will make them last longer and work better for you. We can:

• Provide regular servicing for your appliances
• Check that your gas system is leak-free, and working efficiently
• Tell you if an appliance is nearing the end of its working life so that you can get prepared to replace it
• Put you in our reminder system for yearly service checks. Then it’s our job to remember to call you!
