Hot water cylinders or instantaneous continuous flow water heaters can fail anywhere between 5 and 75 years of age. If your hot water system is more than 15 years old, it could fail within the next 5 years. The life-span of a particular applicance depends on a number of factors such as:
- How much it gets used from day to day.
- How long individual components of the appliance last, for example whether moving parts wear out, or a circuit-board or other metallic part corrodes.
- The physical environment where the appliance is installed, for example whether it’s cold and damp or hot and dry.

On the other hand, an unexpected Christmas Day call-out to replace your old cylinder could cost you $500-$1000 just to get a plumber to look.
